A thermal switch acting as overload protector for a motor comprises, as separate assembly units, a cover 102 carrying a heater 120, a base 20 carrying a thermally responsive element, e.g. snap-acting, contact-carrying bi-metallic disc 66, and fixed contacts 42, 44, and (optionally) a second cover 102<SP>1</SP> carrying a heater 220, the units being assembled as shown and held together by a spring clip 150. Spring strips 132, 132<SP>1</SP>, resiliently connect the heaters 120, 220, with one of the fixed contacts, contact 44 as shown. Heater 120 is in series with the start winding 302 and heater 220 in series with the main winding 304 of the motor 300 being protected, and excess current through the heaters and the disc 66 will cause the latter to snap to open contacts 42, 62, and 44, 64 to de-energize the motor and protect both windings from overheating.
