PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk apparatus which has a function capable of improving the precision of setting the initial position of an optical pickup. SOLUTION: When a power source is turned on, a rezero operation is started, then the optical pickup is moved toward an almost target position by first kick operation first. In this case, when the number of a first jump pulses at the time of the first kick operation from an encoder for jump pulse reaches the number of first jump, operation is switched to second kick operation from the first kick operation, when the number of the second jump pulses at the time of the second kick operation from the encoder for jump pulse reaches the number of second jump, initial position setting processing for the optical pickup is finished. Therefore, setting accuracy of the initial position of the optical pickup is improved, a waiting time until reproducing or recording is started becomes less and operability is improved for a user.
