PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water absorbent resin and a method for production thereof, wherein a balance between the decrease of a fine powder generated during the production and the lowering of the amount of residual monomer in the resulting water absorbent resin can be achieved. SOLUTION: The method for production of the water absorbent resin related to the present invention comprises; a process to prepare a polymer gel with water-absorbing property; a process to prepare a granulated gel by adding at least one additive selected from a group consisting of a thermally-degradable radical polymerization initiator, an oxidant and a reductant, to a fine powder which is obtained during the production of the water absorbent resin and has a weight-average particle size ranging 10-150μm; and a process to dry in the presence of the granulated gel together with the polymer gel.
