PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a purification method capable of efficiently removing a polymerization catalyst from a vinyl polymer supplied by an atom transfer radical polymerization and free from problems in practical production such as the disposal of solid wastes and the lowering of purity of an organic solvent to be recycled. SOLUTION: A vinyl polymer produced by atom transfer radical polymerization of a vinyl monomer using a transition metal complex as a polymerization catalyst is purified by contacting the vinyl polymer with water to remove the residual metal catalyst from the vinyl polymer.
