<p>A cross-flow propulsion mechanism (10) for use in providing propulsion to an aircraft, includes a housing (11) defining an inlet (12), a rotor compartment (14), and an outlet (18). The inlet (12) is adapted to receive an inflow of air along a first longitudinal axis (A-A). The rotor (16) is mounted within the rotor compartment (14) and adapted to receive the airflow introduced into said housing (11) through the inlet (12) and rotate about a second longitudinal axis that is substantially perpendicular to the first longitudinal axis (A-A). The outlet (18) is adapted to receive the airflow processed through the rotor (16) and exhaust air along a third longitudinal axis (B-B) that is substantially parallel to the first longitudinal axis (A-A). The propulsion mechanism can be applied in a personal aircraft, an STOL aircraft, and a hybrid automobile and aircraft.</p> |
