A mobile terminal having a function of setting a background of a text message and its operation method are provided to easily transfer the content of a message although it is short, and allow a user to easily create a text message on a text message background image. A background menu is set and selected in a mobile terminal(S1). A background image is generated by directly inputting a special character or an emoticon or the background image is edited by fetching a text message stored in a different character storage box(S2). The generated background image is stored in a character background box(S3). When a text message is created, the background image stored in the character background box is fetched(S4). A character is inputted to a blank portion other than the fetched background image to create a new text message(S5).
