The meter system (10) of the present invention allows for automated water utility resource measurements, data collection and exercise of control and notification of fire hydrant (100) water usage and, in one example, includes : a portable water meter (20) that is releaseably mountable onto a discharge nozzle (110) of the fire hydrant (100); a flow sensor (30) that senses the water flow rate passing therethrough the portable water meter (20); a processor (50) that is configured to receive, processs, and/or store data fr om the flow sensors (30); and a satellite positioning system (40), operatively coupled to the processor, that is adapted to receive satellite position determining signals. The hydrant meter system (10) further has a communicati on device (60) that is adapted to transmit the processed flow signal and the processed positioning signal to a remote server system (2) via a communicati on medium (70).
