<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce nonuniform glossiness caused during the formation of a color image. <P>SOLUTION: An image forming section forms a color image on an intermediate transfer body by forming an image in one color by one rotation of the intermediate transfer body, and then superposing images in two or more colors onto the intermediate transfer body by two or more rotations of the intermediate transfer body. The image thus formed by the image forming section is transferred and fixed onto paper. The paper passed through the fixing section is returned to the transfer section by causing the paper to switchback toward a return path in order that the other side of the paper is also subject to the transfer of an image. In this case, the paper is first returned at a speed equal to the speed at which the paper is conveyed during the transfer. When the trailing end of the paper is brought to the position where the trailing end cannot be grabbed on a tray by a user, the paper is returned while rotated two or more times.
