PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnesium based composite material having thermal properties suitable to a forming material for a heat radiation member, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The magnesium based composite material contains pure magnesium or a magnesium alloy as a matrix metal, and contains SiC particles as a dispersant. The SiC particles and the molten metal of the magnesium alloy or the like are contacted in an inert atmosphere to be compounded. By performing the compounding in the inert atmosphere in this way, the reaction of the magnesium alloy or the like with the atmospheric gas is prevented. In particular when high purity SiC particles are used as the dispersant raw material, their reaction with the molten metal hardly occurs upon the compounding, and the damage of the SiC component can be reduced.
