PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable setting of appropriate focus offset even for the unrecorded reproduction layer of an optical disk having a plurality of recording and reproducing layers in an optical disk drive. SOLUTION: It is discriminated whether the recording and reproducing layer of an unrecorded state is present in the plurality of recording and reproducing layers of the optical disk loaded in the drive or not, as the result of discrimination, when the recording and reproducing layer of the unrecorded state is present, a signal for adjusting focus offset is recorded in a region other than a region in which user data are recorded in the recording and reproducing layer of the unrecorded state, the recorded signal for adjusting focus offset is reproduced and signal quality is evaluated, an appropriate focus offset value is obtained on the basis of the evaluation result and it is set, and a recording operation is performed.
