PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction stir welding tool which enables a long service life and a superior welding. SOLUTION: The friction stir welding tool is provided with a columnar rotor 11 and a stirring shaft 12 projected coaxially from the end face 13 of the rotor. Welding is performed by rotating and inserting the stirring shaft 12 into a weld zone where a pair of members to be welded are abutted on each other and by stirring the weld zone while softening it through frictional heat generated. The tool is provided integrally with a tool outer member 1A which is formed of a material of high toughness and constitutes the outer shape of the rotor 11 and of the stirring shaft 12, and a tool core member 1B which is formed of a material of high rigidity and mounted on the rotary shaft inside the tool outer member 1A.
