The invention relates to a method of operating a refrigerating machine, especially a heat pump, which comprises a closed cycle with a refrigerant. In said cycle, an evaporator (12), a compressor (14), a condenser (16) and an electronically controlled expansion valve (18) are disposed one after the other. The inventive method is characterized in that the compressor is alternately switched between a compressor state in which the refrigerant is compressed and an idle state in which the refrigerant is not compressed.
