Method for coding positions of data elements in a data structure

The coding method has position codes (P) assigned to the data element positions in a given serial sequence, the position codes selected so that further position codes provided between the positions of 2 data elements (A,B) can be used for coding the positions of further data elements, the code length of at least one of the further position codes being greater than the code lengths of the position codes for the adjacent data elements. Also included are Independent claims for the following: (a) a device for coding the data positions in a data structure; (b) a device for decoding data positions in a data structure; (c) a device for coding and decoding of position codes of data elements in a data structure.
