A system and a method summarize a multi- medium stored in a compressed multi-medium file divided into segment strings. The multi-medium content is, for example, a video signal, an audio signal, a text, or binary data. A meta data file associated includes index information and the importance level of each segment. The importance information is continuous in a closed section. The threshold value of the importance level is selected in the closed section. Among the multi-media, only the segment having the particular importance level higher than the threshold value of the importance level is reproduced. The importance level can also be calculated for a fixed-length window consisting of a plurality of segments, i.e., a sliding window. Furthermore, the importance level may be weighted according to the coefficient such as the sound volume.
