ENERGY ABSORBING STRUCTURE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lower instrument panel support structure capable of easily providing an energy absorbing structure with excellent cost effectiveness not depending on a collision position of the knee of an occupant. SOLUTION: The lower instrument panel assembly for an automobile has a compartment surround 14 mounted within a vehicle instrument panel 12; a compartment 16 mounted within the compartment surround; and the energy absorbing structure mounted between the compartment surround and a member reaction surface 20 within the vehicle. The energy absorbing structure is vertically aligned relative to a load vector of a front collision of the occupant from the inside of the vehicle to the lower instrument panel assembly.
