PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary operation type electronic component capable of achieving a low profile and a low cost. SOLUTION: This invention provides a variable resistor comprising a flexible insulating substrate 2, a metallic reinforcing plate 3 bonded to the insulating substrate 2, and a metallic sliding contact element 6 rotatably attached to the metallic reinforcing plate 3. The overall thickness of the insulating substrate 2 is set to 0.1 mm or less, for example. The metallic reinforcing plate 3 is an integral unit having a cylinder shaft 28 to be engaged with the sliding contact element 6 to hold the element 6 rotatably on the insulating substrate, and a variable side electrode 44.
