PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compact zoom lens, having a high zoom ratio and capable of obtaining a high optical performance extending over the whole zoom range. SOLUTION: The zoom lens includes, in order from an object side to an image side; a first lens group, having positive refractive power, a second lens group having negative refractive power; a third lens group having positive refractive power and a forth lens group having positive refractive power, and at zooming, the second and forth lens groups are shifted; and the third lens group comprises, in the order starting from the object side to the image side, a positive lens G31, a negative lens G32 and a positive lens G33, and the forth lens group comprises, in the order starting from the object side to the image side, a positive lens and a negative lens, and provided that the focal distances of the third lens group and the forth lens group are expressed by f3 and f4, respectively; the focal distances at a wide angle end and a telephoto end are expressed by fw and ft, respectively; and image magnification at the wide-angle end and the telephoto end of the forth lens group are expressed byβ4w andβ4t, respectively, the following conditions are satisfied; 1.2<β4t/β4w<2.4, 0.761/2<0.99, and 2.0
