Provided is a method for decreasing a demand for gas in consolidation furnace during consolidation of soot body into glass preform, by inducing inert gas stream to seal part of the furnace. The method comprises inducing inert gas stream to seal part of consolidation furnace, so as to decrease loss of gas in the furnace during consolidation of soot body into glass preform. The consolidation furnace is a crystal muzzle. The furnace has a gas-injection line and a gas-discharge line. The seal part is located on the top and the bottom of the furnace. The seal part is located around the gas-injection line and the gas-discharge line. The inert gas is selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, argon, helium, neon, and carbon dioxide. The inert gas is dry.
