PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic auto tensioner capable of preventing a belt from being over-tensed by the play of the belt. SOLUTION: The upper opening of a cylinder 1 in which a bottomed sleeve 2 is installed is sealed with a seal member 3, a plunger 5 slidable in the bottomed sleeve 2 is connected to the lower end of a rod 4 slidably passed through the seal member 3, and the elastic force of a tension adjusting spring 15 is applied to the rod 4 to impart a projecting property to the rod in the outer direction. A passage 10 communicating a pressure chamber 7 formed on the lower side with a reservoir chamber 8 formed on the upper side is formed in the plunger 5, and a check valve 11 is installed in the passage 10. Hydraulic oil is filled in the sleeve 2, the amount of the hydraulic oil is set to less than 100% of the volume of the pressure chamber 7 formed on the lower side at a stop where the plunger 5 is located at the upper limit of a movable area, and an area where a hydraulic damper is generated is formed in the plunger movable area to prevent the belt from being over-tensed when the play of the belt occurs.
