PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out removal work of an expansion joint easily and in a short time without using heavy machinery. SOLUTION: There is provided an expansion joint removing method according to which a suitable number of edge cutting holes 11 are bored at a corner portion of a cutting projected line 15 by a core drill, and an uncut area due to use of a circular cutter is almost eliminated. Then through holes 12 into which a threaded steel rod 4 for lifting and removing the expansion joint 6 is inserted, are bored in a floor slab at locations opposite to each other across the expansion joint 6, and intervals between the edge cutting holes 11 are cut by the circular cutter, followed by setting a separation auxiliary tool astride the cut line 15 and fixing the same to a removal block 10 by means of the threaded steel rod. Further a claw portion 51 of a claw jack 5 is inserted into a gap, and the claw jack 5 is operated to separate the removal block 10 from a transverse girder 2. In the same manner the expansion joint 6 on the opposite side is separated, and by using a hoisting fitting of the separation auxiliary tool, the expansion joint is lifted and removed.
