Composition (C1) comprising gold on a reducible oxide support, which has a halogen/gold molar ratio of 0.05 or less and a particle size of 10 nm or less and has been subjected to a reduction treatment, is new, provided that the reducible oxide is not cerium oxide nor a combination of cerium oxide and zirconium or praseodymium oxide nor a combination of cerium oxide and titanium or tin oxide with a titanium/cerium or tin/cerium atomic ratio below 50%. Independent claims are also included for: (1) producing C1 by contacting the support with a gold halide and optionally a silver, platinum, palladium or copper compound at a pH of at least 8, separating solids and washing the solids with a basic solution, the product being reduced before or after washing; (2) producing C1 by depositing gold and optionally silver, platinum, palladium or copper on cerium oxide by impregnation or ion exchange and washing the product with a basic solution having a pH of at least 10, the product being reduced before or after washing; (3) oxidizing carbon monoxide using C1 as a catalyst; (4) purifying air containing carbon monoxide, ethylene, aldehydes, amines, mercaptans and/or volatile organic compounds, e.g. fatty acids, hydrocarbons (especially aromatic hydrocarbons) and malodorous compounds, by contacting the air with C1; (5) cigarette filter containing C1. |
