Provided is a belt type continuously variable transmission (1-1; 1-2; 1-3; 1-4) that includes a primary pulley (50); a secondary pulley (60); a belt (100) where the primary pulley (50) and the secondary pulley (60) are bound; a positioning hydraulic chamber (55) which presses a primary movable sheave (53) to a primary fixed sheave (52); a supply-side valve (71) and a discharge-side control valve (72) which controls the permission or the prohibition of the discharge of the working oil from the positioning hydraulic chamber (55) to the outside. The discharge-side control valve (72) prohibits the discharge of the working oil from the positioning hydraulic chamber (55) to the outside when a position of the primary movable sheave (53) is kept constant in the axial direction with respect to the primary fixed sheave (52).
