The device has sensor technology (7) to detect when a deformation of the car body (1) occurs through an object crashing onto it. The signals emitted from the sensor go to an evaluation unit to determine information about the nature of the crash which then releases at least one protection system on the vehicle depending on this information. A transmission and compensation device (5) is provided which, when the car bodywork is involved in a crash, transmits the effective energy to the sensor and which knows the temperature behaviour appropriate to the vehicle body in order to compensate for temperature influences on the response characteristics of the sensor arrangement.
