An opening and closing device for a sliding door of an automobile is provided to overcome inconvenience that a passenger has to open and close the sliding door in person, reduce the number of working processes by improving the structure thereof, and also reduce the failure rate. An opening and closing device for a sliding door(200) of an automobile, comprises a frame(100), a link part, a transfer part(20), a gear part(30), and a gear conversion part. The link part is pivotable by a predetermined angle, being connected to one side of the sliding door. The transfer part is connected to the link part and movable forward and backward along a guide rail(101). The gear part is fixed to one side of the transfer part to move the transfer part by a motor(80). The gear conversion part selectively operates the gear part so that the sliding door can be opened and closed both automatically and manually. The link part comprises a fixing bracket(11) connected to the sliding door, a first link(12) hinged upon the fixing bracket, and a second link(13) hinged upon the first link.
