<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simplified and compact tray returning device and a tray returning method. <P>SOLUTION: By using a weight difference between the trays 2 on which workpieces 3 are placed and empty trays 2 after workpieces 3 are taken out from them, a lowering motion restriction release means is operated, and a lifting/lowering table 9 on which the empty trays 2 are placed is lowered resisting the weight of a balance weight 30. When the lifting/lowering table 9 reaches a lowering end position, a lifting motion restriction means becomes effective by a link mechanism 32. Therefore, the lifting/lowering table 9 is positioned and held in the lowering end position, and the empty trays 2 are moved from a tray delivering passage 5 to a tray returning passage 6.
