PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium capable of coping with higher recording density and having higher coercive force and lower noise, to provide a production method thereof and to provide a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is characterized in that at least a nonmagnetic undercoat layer, a nonmagnetic intermediate layer, a magnetic layer, and a protective layer are laminated in this order on a nonmagnetic substrate, and at least one of the layers of the nonmagnetic undercoat layer is constituted of a WV based multicomponent body-centered cubic crystal alloy.
