PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium wherein formation of a fatty acid metal salt on the surface of the medium is suppressed and which compatibly has excellent running durability, reliability and electromagnetic transducing characteristics even in a magnetic recording and reproducing system having high recording density, and to provide a magnetic recording and reproducing method using the same. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium wherein at least a magnetic layer containing ferromagnetic metal powder and a binder is provided on a support, the ferromagnetic metal powder has 25 to 60 nm average major axis length and an absorbance ratio of the fatty acid metal salt and a fatty acid measured by an FT-IR analysis in an accumulated matter accumulated when the surface of the magnetic layer is pushed to a sapphire edge and made to run is≤0.50.
