PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus or an image processing method, which can apply desired image processing to color data which shows an input image, without generating unevenness of tone variation, impairment of tone expression capability and deterioration of color reproducibility. SOLUTION: In the image processing apparatus, first color data which show a color image are input, predetermined processing is applied to the color image, and second color data which corresponds to the first color data are output. The apparatus is equipped with an operation processing means which adjusts the tone of a color image, expressed by the first color data for every pixel and outputs third color data; a smooth processing means which applies smooth processing to the third color data and outputs fourth color data; and a means which obtains difference between the third color data and the fourth color data for every pixel, selects either the third color data and the fourth color data for every pixel, based on the difference concerned and forms the second color data by using the selected data.
