PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reaction reagent which hardly has a pungent or unpleasant odor and contains an easily synthesized thiol compound having reactivity equivalent to or higher than that of a conventionally used lower aliphatic or aromatic thiol compound, and preparation methods of a sulfide and a cyclic thioacetal using the reaction reagent. SOLUTION: The reaction reagent comprises a compound of formula [1]. In the preparation method of the sulfide, a cyclic acetal is reacted with the compound of formula [1] in the presence of an acid. In a preparation method of the compound of formula [1], an alkoxybenzyl alcohol, an alkoxybenzyl halide or an alkoxyphenol is reacted with a sulfide and optionally further reacted with an alkylating agent. In the preparation method of the cyclic thioacetal, the compound of formula [1] is reacted with the cyclic acetal to prepare a sulfide which is further subjected to cyclization reaction.
