A compact zoom lens is provided to reduce the number of lenses proper for an imaging optical system using a solid-state imaging device, so that the zoom lens is made compact and thin. A zoom lens includes a first lens group(100) having a negative refractive power, a second lens group(110) having a positive refractive power, and a third lens group(120) having a positive refractive power. The first to third lens groups are successively arranged from an object side toward an image side. The first, second, and third lens groups move when magnification changes between a wide-angle stage and a telephoto stage. The refractive index(G1n) of at least one lens element of the first lens group satisfies a condition, 1.90<G1n<2.00.
