PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically match a focus on a desired object by enhancing ranging capability and using ranging result up to the desired object. SOLUTION: When the ranging result Mag1 of a ranging view angle as a reference is not data impossible to range NG at step ST11, the ranging view angle Mag1 is regarded as the representative value Magd of the ranging result at step ST13. When being the data NG, the minimum value is selected from the ranging view angle offset in an outside direction more than the ranging view angle as the reference and the ranging results Mag2-Mag4 of the ranging view angle in which a view angle is wide. When the minimum values are not the data NG, the minimum value is the representative value Magd at step ST16. When the minimum values are the data NG, the representative value Magd is selected by using the ranging results Mag5, 6 of the ranging view angle offset in the outside direction. Drive setting of a lens, i.e., a moving direction and moving speed of the focus lens are set to start the focusing operation on the basis of the representative value of the ranging result and the detected focus position.
