PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus for recording information so that sub pictures can be properly selected at reproduction, in which the information is recorded, and also to provide a reproducing apparatus capable of selecting the recorded information and variously reproducing the information. SOLUTION: When the recording apparatus outputs compressed multiplex information including video data and sub picture data and records attached information and the compressed multiplex information to a DVD, the apparatus includes a forced picture output command in the sub picture data in order to forcibly display the sub picture data. When the reproducing apparatus detects that the sub picture must be forcibly outputted at reproduction (step S1), the reproducing apparatus displays a sub video image in a language in the case that the language of the sub video image to be displayed is set in advance (step S3), the reproducing apparatus displays a sub video image corresponding to a language of a voice in the case that the language of the voice to be output is selected in advance (step S6), or the reproducing apparatus displays a sub video image in a language in the case that the language to be reproduced and displayed is set in advance peculiarly to the reproducing apparatus (step S9).
