PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a resin for an optical material and a formed optical part suitable for industrial production while suppressing the formation of by-products in the polymerization step of the production process of a resin for optical material usable as a raw material of a formed optical part and in the polymerization-curing step in the production of a formed part of an optical material and provide a formed optical part having decreased by-product content and excellent transparency, curability and adhesiveness to a substrate. SOLUTION: A resin for optical material essentially free from lactone compounds as by-products is produced by the light exposure of a mixture containing a methacrylate and/or its oligomer obtained by a production process in the presence of a strong acid and a radical photopolymerization initiator wherein the light-exposure polymerization of the mixture is carried out after removing the strong acid in the methacrylate to decrease the strong acid concentration in the mixture to≤100 ppm.
