PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely change over operation characteristics of an engine valve with good response in a valve system for an internal combustion engine provided with a valve operation characteristic change over means capable of changing operation characteristics of the engine valve. SOLUTION: The valve operation characteristics change over means 26 is provided with a connection operation member 50 capable of change over an alternative connecting condition of a drive rocker arm 24 to both free rocker arms 2, 23 and a connection release condition of the drive rocker arm 24 against both free rocker arms 22, 23, and commonly provided on the drive rocker arm 24 and both free rocker arm 22, 23.
