PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a base material for forming a high quality optical device having micro-weight and small weight variation. SOLUTION: The base material for forming the optical device is a columnar shaped glass and the relation between the diameter D (mm) and the weight (m) (mg) is in a range surrounded by A (D=0.1 mm, m=10 mg), B (D=4 mm, m=400 mg), C (D=6 mm, m=150 mg) and D (D=0.1 mm, m=3 mg).
