Method for operating an optosensor

An optical sensor (1) has a transmitter (5) for irradiating light (4) towards an object (2), a receiver (7) for the light (6) reflected from the object, and an evaluation unit (8) that generates binary switching signal indicating if the object within a monitored area or not. An evaluation parameter is derived from the received signals of the receiver. The values or ranges of the evaluation parameter frequency distributions are also determined. The switching status of the binary switching signals or the status of the optical sensor is determined and updated using the determined values. An independent claim is included for the optical sensor.
