A target position setting device has a distance measurement means (12) for measuring the distance to an object in the periphery of a vehicle; an imaging means (11) for imaging the environment in the periphery of the vehicle; a first calculation means (51) for calculating, based on the result of measurement by the distance measurement means (12), a first target position candidate for the vehicle; a second calculation means (51) for calculating, based on the result of imaging by the imaging means (11), a second target position candidate for the vehicle; a determination means (51) for determining whether or not the relationship between the first target position candidate and the second target position candidate meets a predetermined condition; and a setting means (51) for setting a target position based on the second target position candidate when it is determined by the determination means (51) that the relationship between the first target position candidate and the second target position candidate meets the predetermined condition.
