A yarn with mineral (especially basalt) fibers for use in fiber-reinforced plastics composites has the mineral fibers wound with a thermoplastic filament (7). Independent claims are also included for (1) production of the yarn by winding Junkers process-produced basalt short fibers with a thermoplastic filament (7) and then stretching the product; and (2) production of an infiltratable fiber-reinforced plastic preform by comminuting the yarn in a cutting and spreading mechanism.
