Class 146(3) After the writing unit of a ball-point retractable pen is projected from the casing 8 into writing position, a cylinder 15 is then depressed to slide over the open end of the reservoir 1 and compress the air within the reservoir and thus initiate the flow of ink to the writing ball 3. The cylinder 15 is closed at the upper end, and the lower open end is deformed at 16 to engage over a shoulder on the enlarged end 6 of the reservoir 1. A rubber washer 17, having air-tight engagement with the walls of the cylinder 15, and a brass washer 19, are urged against the end 6 of the reservoir by a coil spring 21, and, in the position shown, the reservoir is in communication with the atmosphere through holes in the end 6 and the washers 17, 19 and a hole 22 in the cylinder 15 just above the washer 19. The writing unit is urged inwardly of the casing 8 by a coil spring 12 which is weaker than the spring 21. A hollow plunger 24 passing through a bush 23 has an enlargement 25 engaging the end of the cylinder 15, and houses the bend of a U-shaped leaf spring 27. The arms of the spring 27 pass through slots to overlie the cylinder 15, and ON one arm is a block 29 on which is a latch pin 30 engaging a slot 31 in the casing 8. On depression of the plunger 24, only the spring 12 is compressed and the writing unit is projected until a shoulder 5 thereon engages a shoulder 11 near the end of the casing. On further depression of the plunger 24, the cylinder 15 slides downwardly over the reservoir to close the vent hole 22 and thus force air into the reservoir; this downward movement is continued until the pin 30 and block 29 reach an enlargement of the slot 31 and spring outwardly into latching position to engage and flex outwardly the end of a pocket clip 33. The writing unit is released by lateral depression of the pocket clip, and retracted by the spring 12. |
