A method and system for providing substitute multimedia contents during a video call are provided to protect privacy of a user and enable interactive communication between the user and the other party. In a state that a video call session is established between terminals A and B(50,60), when a request for transmitting substitute multimedia contents selected by a user is received from the terminal A(50), the terminal A(50) is authenticated as to whether it has been subscribed for a service(201-204). When the terminal A(50) has been subscribed for the service, a media server(30) is inquired about contents suitable for the terminal A(50) and contents suitable for the terminal B(60) to check corresponding contents information(205-209). The fact that substitute multimedia contents will be transmitted through a new session to the terminal B(60) by using the contents information for the terminal B(60) as a parameter is informed, and when terminal information is received from the terminal B(60), the terminal A(50) is informed that the terminal B(60) has received the substitute multimedia contents by using the contents information suitable for the terminal A(50) as a parameter(210-214). The media server(30) is instructed to determine suitable substitute multimedia contents by referring to the terminal information received from the terminal B(60)(215). Substitute multimedia contents suitable for the terminal A are transmitted to the terminal A(50) through the new session with the terminal A(50), and the media server(30) is instructed to transmit the substitute multimedia contents suitable for the terminal B(60) to the terminal B(60) through the new session with the terminal B(60)(216-218).
