An apparatus and a method for processing a thumbnail image in a TV are provided to process a photographic image into a predetermined thumbnail image and to store and output the processed thumbnail image. When a user connects a portable memory having photographic images with a USB(Universal Serial Bus) port(S301), a control member recognizes the connection of the portable memory(S302). When the reading of a photographic image is requested by a user, the control member sets the initialization for reading the stored photographic images and the thumbnail processing mode(S303). Thereafter, the photographic image stored in the portable memory is read out(S304). A process for discriminating whether the read photographic image is coincided with the predetermined thumbnail image format is performed(S305).
