<p>The invention comprises compounds of the general formula (I) <FORM:0980508/C2/1> (in which R is a straight or branched-chain, saturated or unsaturated C1- 16 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, R1 is a straight or branched-chain, saturated or unsaturated C1- 16 aliphatic hydrocarbon group optionally substituted by a hydroxyl, alkoxy, alkylthio or carbalkoxy group, or by an aralkyl, aryl, aryloxy or arylthio group, the aryl radical in each case being optionally substituted by one or more halogen atoms or by a C1- 3 alkyl, C1- 3 alkoxy or nitro group, and A- is the anion of an inorganic or organic acid), and their preparation by (a) reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0980508/C2/2> with R1A, or (b)-in cases where A- is a halide ion-reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0980508/C2/3> (in which X is a halogen atom or a mercapto group and A1- is a halide ion) with Y-R-Y (in which Y is a mercapto group when X is a halogen atom, and a halogen atom when X is a mercapto group) to form a compound (I) in which A-=A1- or is the halide ion corresponding to X or Y, optionally followed in either case by conversion to another salt of the base.
