A three dimensional display 12 comprises an array of quantum dots 11 (nanocrystals) configured to provide a three dimensional image 23. A method of providing the 3D image comprises controlling phase relationships of light produced by quantum dots 11; they may provide a phase coherent image. The three dimensional (stereoscopic) display system comprises quantum dot array 10, quantum dot driver 21, electronically determining which quantum dots 11 are activated and when (dot timing), and a three dimensional phase pattern generator 20; 3D phase generator 20 communicates with the quantum dot driver 21 to determine the phase pattern of light from the quantum dots to provide a 3D image, based on an input video signal. The substantially circular quantum dots 11 may produce red, green, blue (RGB) or cyan, magenta, yellow (CMY) colours. The size, diameter and spacing of quantum dots 11 may be substantially smaller than the shortest visible light wavelength produced. |
