Provided are a coating composition which is free from the formation of gel and/or solidification, is improved in stability and is excellent in gloss, and a method for preparing the composition. The coating composition comprises at least one aqueous polymer dispersion; 0.005-50 parts by weight of at least one ester selected from the group consisting of a monoester of a divalent alcohol and a C7-C10 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, a monoester of a trivalent alcohol and a C7-C10 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, a diester of a trivalent alcohol and a C7-C10 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid and their mixture; and 1.2-10 parts by weight of at least one surfactant, based on 100 parts by weight of a solid part of the total polymer of the composition.
