A character input method of a portable phone is provided to allow a user to easily create a sentence by bring a registered common phrase automatically or when the user presses a common phrase button, after a corresponding representative character is inputted. A common phrase and a corresponding representative character are inputted and registered according to a common phrase registration request of a user. A short message creating screen image is provided(S510). A representative character to be replaced with a common phrase within characters or a character string inputted by the user is discriminated according to a common phrase button ON signal(S520-S540,S541). It is checked whether the discriminated representative character is included in previously registered representative characters(S550). When the discriminated representative character is a registered one, a corresponding common phrase is displayed as replacing the representative character and temporarily stored together with character information previously inputted by the user(S560). |
