The underlay (1) comprises a substrate supporting adjacent tiles (2) each comprising stiff and resilient layers bonded together. A carpet underlay comprises a number of adjacent tiles secured to a substrate and each comprising two or more bonded layers. The first layer is relatively stiff and the second layer is relatively resilient. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) Tile used in the underlay; and (B) Method for laying a carpet using this underlay.
