An IPS(In-Plane Switching) mode LCD and a method for manufacturing the same are provided to cover regions where scratches are generated due to sliding of column spacers even when an upper substrate and a lower substrate are relatively moved, by enlarging the width of a black matrix. A plurality of pixel regions are defined in a first substrate(100) and a second substrate(200), which are apart from each other. Switching elements are formed on the first substrate. A pixel electrode(136) and a common electrode are formed in each pixel region. Gate lines(112) and data lines(128) cross each other, and are electrically connected to the switching elements. Column spacers are disposed between the first and second substrate, and are positioned at a periphery of the pixel regions. A black matrix(202) is formed on the second substrate, and disposed at the periphery of the pixel regions. The black matrix is enlarged to a distance ranging from 4 to 24 micrometers in all directions centering on the central axis of each column spacer. Color filters(204a,204b,204c) are formed on the black matrix. |
