An apparatus for controlling a video phone call in a mobile communication terminal and a method thereof are provided to offer a stable voice call service to the mobile communication terminal though incoming/outgoing a video call from/to other terminal is requested in case that a terminal user performs a task needing concentration while moving at a speed than a reference value. An apparatus for controlling a video phone call in a mobile communication terminal comprises a call mode sensor(11), a speed sensor(12), a call mode converter(14), and a controller(15). The call mode sensor(11) senses whether a requested call incoming/outgoing from/to other terminal is a voice/video call and notifies the result. The speed sensor(12) checks a movement speed of the terminal and notifies the speed information. The call mode converter(14) automatically converts a terminal call mode into a voice call mode or a video call mode. The controller(15) checks the movement speed of the terminal by controlling the speed sensor(12) in case that the call mode sensor(11) notifies the controller that the video call is sensed, and automatically converts the terminal call mode into the voice call mode by controlling the call mode converter(14) in case that the movement speed of the terminal is over the reference speed.
