A video device and a method for controlling an external device by using the same are provided to easily use functions of an external device connected through a predetermined network even in a state that a user does not completely know functions of the external device. A device information analyzing unit(120) analyzes device information of an external device connected with a predetermined network. A device classifying unit(130) classifies the external device by predetermined functions according to a result of the analysis. A control unit(140) displays a list of the classified external device by functions through a predetermined graphic user interface.
