Processes to polymerize or oligomerize olefins by contacting olefins with alpha-diimine metal complexes. In particular, alpha olefins can be produced in high selectivity by contacting ethylene with selected alpha-diimine metal complexes. In some cases an activator such as an alkylaluminum compound is also contacted with ethylene and the alpha-diimine metal complexes.
